The Italian media group GEDI, owned by the Anieli family and controlling publications like La Repubblica and La Stampa, is reportedly in final negotiations to be acquired by Thodoris Kyriakou’s Antenna Group. This potential sale, which might not include La Stampa, could represent a significant move in European media, as a Greek group with international presence and Arab capital gains influence over an influential Italian newspaper. While GEDI shows losses in print but profits in radio, the acquisition is viewed beyond mere business; it carries geopolitical weight due to Antenna Group’s substantial investments from sources like Saudi Arabia’s PIF. The proposed deal has sparked strong reactions from staff at both newspapers, with strikes and protests occurring. Kyriakou’s group has established itself as a geopolitical bridge between Europe and the Middle East through initiatives like the AEGGIS alliance, gaining favor among Italian political figures. If completed, the takeover would shift power in European journalism towards capital from regions like the Balkans and the Gulf.

The editorial output amounts to over a thousand publications per year, mostly in article form.

PULSE also runs 4 thematic networks open to any European journalist interested in crucial issues such as EU enlargement, relations between the EU and other global powers, the EU’s green transition, or media and the information society. These networks function as online communities and periodically publish calls for pitches.
